Breastfeeding
Overview
In this section you can find out about the experience of breastfeeding by seeing and hearing people share their personal stories on film. Researchers travelled all around the UK to talk to 56 women and 2 men in their own homes. Seven new interviews were added in 2015. Find out what people said about issues such as sore nipples, feeding patterns, dealing with difficult times and introducing solid foods. We hope you find the information helpful and reassuring.

Interview 03: And he just latched on straight away. And I just remember just holding him and just feeling him and stroking him and looking at him and just, you know, just having that wonderful, magical bonding experience and just that lovely sort of suckling feeling.
Interview 22: But then once we came home and she was a bit more awake and feeding more often, that's when the trouble really started. And, and I had very, very painful nipples, cracked and bleeding nipples. And it was just agony to breastfeed.
Interview 49: The baby had to suck and suck and suck for a long time because of my slow let down. And once I figured that out, I could start expressing. And once I could start expressing, I could have like one feed off.
Interview 38: Grace went through this phase of having a night time booby and a daytime booby, and one would swell up, like during the day, and one would be really small and they'd be quite lopsided. And I just kind of laughed.
Interview 42: I think she was around the end of six months or seven months, and I tried her with carrots, and she made, she went ‘what’s going on here’ [mimics a baby being unsure of food].
